This site uses Joomla as a Content Management System. It means I no longer have to edit html files then upload them when I want to make changes. Now al I have to do is to log in and start typing. It isn't a lot easier, but does mean I can ask others to type in content. Why choose Joomla? I guess simply because it meets my need and is my favourite CMS. As stated by Joomla the features are: - Completely database driven site engines
- News, products or services sections fully editable and manageable
- Topics sections can be added to by contributing authors
- Fully customisable layouts including left, center and right menu boxes
- Browser upload of images to your own library for use anywhere in the site
- Dynamic Forum/Poll/Voting booth for on-the-spot results
- Runs on Linux, FreeBSD, MacOSX server, Solaris and AIX
Extensive Administration:- Change order of objects including news, FAQs, articles etc.
- Random Newsflash generator
- Remote author submission module for News, Articles, FAQs and Links
- Object hierarchy - as many sections, departments, divisions and pages as you want
- Image library - store all your PNGs, PDFs, DOCs, XLSs, GIFs and JPEGs online for easy use
- Automatic Path-Finder. Place a picture and let Joomla! fix the link
- News feed manager. Choose from over 360 news feeds from around the world
- Archive manager. Put your old articles into cold storage rather than throw them out
- Email-a-friend and Print-format for every story and article
- In-line Text editor similar to Word Pad
- User editable look and feel
- Polls/Surveys - Now put a different one on each page
- Custom Page Modules. Download custom page modules to spice up your site
- Template Manager. Download templates and implement them in seconds
- Layout preview. See how it looks before going live
- Banner manager. Make money out of your site

Welcome to the johncarling.com website. This part of the site is run by a content management system so if you don’t like the look and feel you can change it with the dropdown below at the side somewhere. Sometimes you may have to login to see it. If you want to add something to the site you can register and start writing or uploading pictures. It is very easy to do and you don't need any html skills or to have edited a website before. We don't allow spam or any offensive remarks, but pretty much anything else goes in some parts. Links down the side will take you to other areas of the site. Make sure you check out the cool 3d in various sections. At the moment most work is going into the Historic Houses section but the stage lighting simulation and anatomy work is also worth looking at. Be aware that some of the 3d work will not work on every computer. Some requires you to have Java installed and some needs the free Adobe Director Shockwave plugin. You can find out more by looking at the frequently asked questions or FAQs link. |

What is a content management system? |

A content management system, often called a CMS, is web based software that enables anyone to build a site easily without a lot of training or specific knowledge. Mostly they are used by large or medium sized sites that are updated regularly. Content management systems usually offer a wide range of features including time based publishing, polls and data gathering software, galleries, community tools, administration and editing features and much more. Almost all have a wide range of plug-ins to enhance the basic feature set. The really good thing about many of the CMS on offer is they are open source software which means they are free! Anyone can have one although they are usually best suited to people or organisations requiring a frequently updated reasonably large website. A reasonable degree of IT knowledge is required as setting them up and maintaining them can require a degree of knowledge, although an increasingly large number of auto-installers are available. Use of these often requires minimum knowledge. |

There are many good content management systems and one of the best is called Drupal. A very good article by IBM comparing it to other similar systems is here and is well worth reading if you are thnking of choosing a CMS. It's worth noting that Mambo is very like Joomla. The latter grew out of the former after some political difficulties at Miro who funded the development of Mambo after which many of the developers left and set up Joomla. They both seem to be chugging along nicely and I'd recommend either. I'd also like to add my 2p worth to the IBM article: I've always found it easier to create themes for Mambo/Joomla than for Drupal. Also there are probably more out there for Mambo which can be used or edited. It is also possible to use one of the several commercial installers for any of this software so there comments on installation are valid but may not apply to everyone. |
